What is Myofascial Release?
Written by Dr. Viviana Sokol, February 6, 2024
Myofascial release is a manual therapy method used to relieve pain and restore mobility by releasing tension and tightness in the fascia, a thin layer of connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, and organs of the body. Fascia can become tight or restricted due to injury, overuse, poor posture, or stress, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.

A therapist trained in myofascial release applies gentle, sustained pressure to specific areas of the body where tension or restrictions are present. This pressure helps to elongate and stretch the fascia, breaking up adhesions and restoring mobility.

Myofascial release can be performed using various techniques, including direct myofascial release, in which the therapist applies pressure directly to the restricted area, and indirect myofascial release, in which the therapist applies gentle stretching or traction to the fascia to encourage release.

This therapy is often used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including chronic pain, neck and back pain, fibromyalgia, headaches, and other forms of discomfort. It can also be beneficial for improving posture, flexibility, and overall mobility.

While myofascial release is considered safe, it may cause temporary discomfort or soreness, especially during the initial sessions as the body adjusts to the release of tension. It's essential to work with a qualified and experienced therapist who can tailor the treatment to your specific needs and ensure proper technique and safety. As with any medical treatment, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting myofascial release therapy, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or concerns.

Dr. Sokol received training in Myofascial Release from John F. Barnes, PT.  Mr. Barnes has trained over 100,000 therapists and physicians, is an international lecturer, author and authority on Myofascial Release.
