Cranio-sacral therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of therapy that focuses on the cranio-sacral system, which includes the bones of the skull (cranium), the spine, and the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine). Developed by osteopathic physician Dr. John Upledger in the 1970s, this therapy aims to alleviate tension and promote balance within the body by manipulating the cranio-sacral rhythm, which is thought to be the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid as it circulates around the brain and spinal cord.
During a session, the practitioner uses light touch techniques to assess and manipulate the bones and tissues of the head, neck, and spine, as well as other parts of the body as needed. The goal is to release restrictions in the cranio-sacral system, improve the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, and enhance the body's ability to self-heal.
Cranio-sacral therapy is often used to treat a variety of conditions, including headaches, neck and back pain, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders, stress, anxiety, and more. It is generally considered safe and suitable for all age groups from newborns to the elderly.
It is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatment. As always, it's important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional before pursuing any form of alternative therapy.
